Lobbying and Policy Change

Project Gila works against institutionalized exclusion and discrimination of trans people, developing proper solutions that will address the prolonged neglect of our communities. We advance the rights of trans people via our work within government committees and ministries, institutional agencies and state authorities. We do so through lobbying and legal work. Throughout the years we have taken part in struggles for the right to health, among others, and in improving the treatment provided within the public health care system for those wishing to undergo medical procedures for gender reassignment; we contributed to the formulation of a cultural inclusivity protocol for working with trans people which was then published by the mental health department within the Ministry of Health; and we advanced a reform to the Israel Prison Service policy of isolating transgender prisoners which led to the end of this practice.

Training for medical and welfare teams

Our communities do not receive good enough answers from the health and welfare systems. Due to transphobic incidents, lack of knowledge and inadequate treatment, many womenMany in our communities are prevented from accessing medical and mental health care and consuming welfare services. In order to promote the rights of the transgender community in front of the medical and welfare authorities, and to work for the improvement of services, we established the Gila training project.

During the last two years we have met about 3000 women in medicine, psychiatry, psychology and social work, nursing teams, administrative workers in the field of medicine and medical and nursing students.

Training for Medical Teams and Social Welfare Workers

The Israeli medical and social welfare systems do not adequately address the needs of our communities. Due to prevalent transphobia, a lack of information and inappropriate treatment, many members of our communities tend to avoid the medical, mental and social welfare services they require. In order to promote the rights of our community and improve the services offered by the health care system, we created the Gila Training Project. In the past two years we met with over 3000 medical staff, mental health workers, psychologists, social workers, nursing teams and administrators and provided them with the tools needed to work with all members of the trans community.

Discovered in the Corona crisis

With the beginning of the Corona crisis, we realized in the project that our community is on the brink of an unprecedented economic crisis, which will be affected, among other things, by the right to a roof over a roof. In the first closure, we initiated and launched a project to collect donations and distribute rent assistance to the poor, to which we were joined by other organizations (Transitions and Transitions Israel). In the second closure, in cooperation with the trans organizations and with the support of the Shusterman Foundation, we put together a project to distribute aid grants on a much larger scale.

In both closures, we distributed close to a million NIS in aid funds, in addition to distributing food baskets and shopping vouchers.

To everyone who applied for a grant, we offered additional help in exercising rights and legal assistance in dealing with debts and evictions from apartments.
